Waterloo Township, which contained Marshfield, Carbondale, and Mineral City, was organized in 1826.

The first settler was Moses Hewitt.

The first mill was on Margaret's Creek and was owned by John Hewitt.

The first grist and sawmill was constructed by Joseph Brookson.

Marshfield was located in the central portion of the township.

There were several business located in Marshfield; including William McPherson General Store, Joseph Kaler General Store, W.G. Gallagher & Co. Drugs and Groceries, and L.S. Stright and Son Tannery.

The B&O Railroad ran through Marshfield until the 1980s. The tracks ran through the middle of town.

The station was located on Depot Street, with the platform facing Railroad Street.

The Marshfield post office was established September 17, 1857.
